Six Module Reading Instruction for the Elementary Years Course
Pre-reading Skills:
The course begins by exploring the foundations of pre-reading skills. Parents will learn how to foster a love for reading, and engage their child in early literacy activities that promote vocabulary development, and phonemic awareness.
Comprehension Strategies: Building upon the pre-reading skills, parents will explore various comprehension strategies to help their child understand and retain what they read.
Learning to Read vs. Reading to Learn: Parents will explore the important distinction between learning to read and reading to learn. They will understand the transition from decoding words to comprehending complex texts, and how to support their child in this crucial stage.
Fluency and Its Significance: Parents will learn the value of repeated reading, sight word recognition, and strategies to support automaticity in reading. The importance of fluency for overall reading comprehension will be emphasized.
